With the specter of generative AI threatening to make writers like me obsolete, I’ve been considering more experimental kinds of writing; stuff too wild for the robots to replicate.
One project I’ve begun work on is a modern successor to Ambrose Bierce’s 1906 classic, The Devil’s Dictionary. This book eschewed traditional dictionary definitions and instead offered satirical ones to highlight the absurdity of society. For instance:
LOVE (n): A temporary insanity curable by marriage…
I’ve begun to develop my own satirical definitions for the modern age, and I’m planning to eventually compile them into a book, tentatively titled The Devil’s Digital Dictionary. It’s still in its fetal stages, and too far from publication to risk showing to all my readers. But, for my cherished paid subscribers, I have enough trust to show a sneak peek of the project, in the form of 40 definitions.
Much of my work can be dense and gloomy, so I’ll try to occasionally mix things up with light-hearted content like this. If these definitions don’t make you think, then I hope they’ll at least make you smile.
The Devil’s Digital Dictionary: A Teaser
ARTIFICIAL GENERAL INTELLIGENCE: A hypothetical machine that terrifies humans because they fear it may one day behave just like them.
BITCOIN: A revolutionary, decentralized, hyper-secure method of melting polar ice caps.
CENSORSHIP: A method of making dangerous information go viral.
CHURCH: A book club that only ever discusses one book.
COOKIES: Like death and taxes, something that everyone must sooner or later accept.
